How IGI Airport moved from 101 rank to world’s best

The airport received three international awards, including one for the best airport by size in the Asia Pacific region.

Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) has been named as the world’s number 1 position for the second consecutive year in 25-40 Million Passengers Per Annum (MPPA) category.

The airport, on February 29, 2016, received three international awards, including one for the best airport by size in the Asia Pacific region. The rankings were announced by the Airports Council International (ACI) for the 2015 Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Awards.

The two other awards for IGIA are for best airport by size and region Asia Pacific (25-40 MPPA), and the second best airport by region (Asia Pacific).

Some interesting facts about Indira Gandhi International Airport:

  • The airport is spread over an area of 5,106 acres. After Mumbai, it is the second busiest airport in the country in terms of cargo traffic
  • With the commencement of operations at Terminal 3 in 2010, IGIA became India’s and South Asia’s largest aviation hub, with a current capacity of handling more than 40 million passengers
  • The planned expansion programme for the airport is likely to increase its capacity to handle 100 million passengers by 2030

  • The airport was operated by the Indian Air Force before its management was transferred to the Airports Authority of India
  • The management of the airport was passed over to the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) in May 2006
  • In 2010, the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) was conferred the fourth best airport award in the world in the 15-25 million category and Best Improved Airport in the Asia-Pacific Region by Airports Council International
  • In 2015, the airport was rated as the best airport in the world in the 25-40 million passengers category by the Airports Council International
  • At the Skytrax World Airport Awards 2015, the airport was awarded The Best Airport in Central Asia and Best Airport Staff in Central Asia.
