Video streaming service Netflix Inc. has finally launched its services in India. The announcement was made at CES 2016 in Las Vegas where NetFlix announced the availability of its services worldwide and the long list of countries (190 in all) includes India as well. Netflix is the world’s top video streaming service that allows users to watch content on screens ranging from a smartphones to a smart television. It works with a variety of other devices like PlayStation and Apple TV, letting users stream directly onto larger screen. Netflix is also the creator of a lot of original, made for the web content, much of which is now in high-resolution Ultra HD.
More importantly, Netflix is even offering a one month free trial package where users can choose between any of the three monthly packages, Basic, Standard and Premium.
At the CES 2016 Keynote, Co-founder and Chief Executive, Reed Hastings of Netflix said , “Today you are witnessing the birth of a new global Internet TV network. With this launch, consumers around the world — from Singapore to St. Petersburg, from San Francisco to Sao Paolo — will be able to enjoy TV shows and movies simultaneously — no more waiting. With the help of the Internet, we are putting power in consumers hands to watch whenever, wherever and on whatever device.”
Netflix is the world’s leading Internet television network with over 70 million members in over 190 countries enjoying more than 125 million hours of TV shows and movies per day, including original series, documentaries and feature films. Its plans for 2016 include releasing 31 new and returning original series, two dozen original feature films and documentaries, a wide range of stand-up comedy specials and 30 original kids series; all of which will be available to everyone everywhere in the world at the same time.
For now Netflix has limited Indian content, but they are working on getting more partners on board. An initial recce suggests all the popular Bollywood classics are there from Piku, Sing is King,Lootera, Heropanti, Youngistaaan Hum Aapke Hai Kaun. However, Netflix is going to be a big boost for independent cinema. which does not get much screens to show on in India.
We aren’t entirely sure if the Indian market is mature enough for those prices yet. Unless Netflix becomes the hub of TV shows& New movie Releases, which could mean the true “cord cutting” scenario will come into play, allowing people to snip the cable TV or Direct-to-Home connections. Right now, it is the perfect tool for a movie marathon on a lazy weekend.
